Frequently Asked Questions

How Laser Hair Removal Works

The treatment works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair with the light from the system, and upon absorption the light is converted into heat. This intense heat action breaks down the hair follicle, reducing the opportunity for any re-growth and also changing the entire structure of the follicle itself; overtime altering the density and appearance of the hair until it becomes unnoticeable.

IPL and Lasers are not permanent hair removal but Permanente hair reduction; do not be misled by false claims. We can reduce your hair growth by up to 10%-15% leaving you with soften, slower and in some cases minimal hair at all.

Prior to treatment the area is shaved. The area needs to be shaved, as the stork of the hair needs to be left present in the follicle so the light is attracted to the dark pigment in the hair. If the hair is removed fully from the hair follicle then the treatment cannot work and if the hair is left above the surface of the skin then there is a possibility of the light being targeted to the incorrect place and the treatment not working. A thin layer of protective gel (similar to that used in ultra sound) is applied to maximise absorption. Finally the Ellipse I2PL is run over the area and a succession of light pulses is filtered into the hair follicle. The unique square head technology used in Ellipse treatments offer precision and accuracy that ensures that any risk of side effects is minimal. Any potentially harmful wave lengths are removed via the Unique Dual Filtering system, meaning that the light used is completely safe and visible.

Once the treatment is complete you may have some heat remaining in the skin, some redness and depending upon the area localised swelling. The hairs that were treated will grow out, like a shaved hair and will be take anything from 3 days to 3 weeks to shed away and fall out. You can encourage this process by shaving or exfoliating the area. Once the hairs have fallen out a hair free period will be seen and then the new hairs that are growing through will be in the active stage ready for treatment.

Number of Hair Removal Treatments

Hair grows in three different cycles Anagen, Catagen and Telegone. We need to treat the hair in the active Anagen stage to ensure maximum disruption is caused to the hair follicle and the Ellipse Permanent Hair Reduction can only successfully treat hair during its growing stage. Therefore it is often necessary to undergo a course of a minimum of 6 treatments ensuring that you leave at least 4-8 weeks between each session initially depending on the area you are treating.

Once you have achieved Permanente hair reduction of 10% -15% then you can go onto maintenance. We advise various programmes for each person depending on the area you have treated. We do strongly advise that you use IPL as your preferred hair removal option for the first year after you initial course of treatments is complete.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

To ensure that as many hair follicles are targeted as possible it is also important not to undergo any hair removal for at least four weeks before the appointment or during the course of treatment. You may shave the area only. The same rule applies to any sun treatments, Self tan and sun beds as a tan will raise the pigment level in the skin and have a severe effect on the treatments’ success.

Skin type is a fundamental effecting factor in this treatment as due to the high level of pigment in the skin, darker skin tones often experience more pain during treatment, though generally it has been compared to the sensation of a rubber band pinging on your skin.

Treating All Skin and Hair Types

We can offer treatment for all skin types 1 – 6. Some people with sensitive skin may benefit from using a soothing gel or Aloe Vera for a few hours following treatment. We will advice on all aftercare that must be followed during the consultation and give you written aftercare instructions to take with you.
